Discussion: How many times have you seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show in a theater?
Nik Chaikin · 20 years, 8 months ago
None :(
Andrea Krause · 20 years, 8 months ago
And have no desire to. *shrug*
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
That suprises me. How come? I'd have guessed you to be a fan.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
Well...I don't like the movie, for one. I know that's not the point of it all though. It just all seems to over the top and tasteless. Which, I know is part of the intention. :) I don't know, it just turns me off. I do like audience participation in general (I loved that aspect of Fruvous shows) it's just this particular culture isn't for me. I fully admit that's more about me than it is about them. :)
meh Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
Well, to each his own. I just think you should give something a chance before writing it off or, more specifically, formulating an opinion of the show without ever actually going. Meh.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

I've had many friends who are big fans and participators who have described the experience to me. From descriptions it doesn't seem like something I'd enjoy. It's not like a bunch of people were trashing it and I'm all "dude, totally, yeah, that sucks!" If my friends' descriptions had held interest for me I would have tried it out.

Maybe it's wrong of me but I'm not going to go out of my way to experience something that by all accounts I've heard has nothing to offer me that I want. It's like saying I have no right to say I wouldn't like a certain salmon dish if others had told me it tastes like fish and I hate fish. Why would I want to try?

I don't feel like I'm losing a thing by not trying the experience. And y'all are *certainly* not missing out on anything by not having me there, so what does it matter? I readily admitted above it was more about me than the participants themselves. Originally all I even wanted to say was that it didn't interest me. I only expounded on why once Gordon asked.

Sorry if I offended fans. All I was trying to do was explain why *I* wasn't interested.

meh Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

you're obviously getting the wrong impression. as i stated, to each his own. that means you're entitled to your opinion. i was simply stating that your opinion isn't formulated from experience and i was suggesting you try it before you "knock" it.

Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

If I read 10 reviews of "Dude, Where's My Car" that point out nothing but things I wouldn't enjoy, why should I then go see it? What's wrong with my saying I'm not interested in it based on what these reviews state? I never say "it is bad and therefore I won't go". I say the information I have been presented with has not held interest for me. Even when I said "over the top and tasteless", which I'll admit is on the judgemental side, I at least said "seems" and was not stating it as a fact independent of my own preferences and filters.

I'm not "knocking it" as an absolute. I'm not saying it has no benefit and it sucks and y'all are idiots for liking it. All I'm saying is the reviews/descriptions I have been provided with (from people who LIKE it, even) have inspired no desire or interest in me to experience it.

One can't go blind into every experience, shell out money to support it, and only then have the right to decide if it's for them. You cull preliminary data from sources you trust and then decide if you have an interest. I am not deciding that I do or do not like the RHPS experience. I'm deciding that based on preliminary information I have no desire to delve further. I'm having trouble seeing why that's wrong.

It's obviously a wonderful experience for many people. All I'm saying is I, personally, don't think it would be my cup of tea and I, personally, have no desire to give it a shot. I have no expectation that my decision and desire has any bearing on what anybody else feels or decides.

I clearly do not have the ability to express my point properly.

meh Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

i'm not even going to read all ofthat. i'm just going to simply say:

you have the right to your own opinion. if your opinion is based off of what others tell you, more power to you. i think you are taking this a few steps further than you need to and, imho, you need to calm down.

no one is denying you the right to your opinion. i just feel itSHOULD be (not HAS to be) based on something more tangible.

Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

I don't think I've been anything but calm. At any rate, you're right, time to end it.

If you're in the Seattle area, or like to drive, my cast (the VTC) has a show the first Saturday of every month at the Admiral Theatre (on California) in West Seattle. You should check out our website: www.thezenroom.com.

There is also a cast, the Blue Mouseketeers, in Tacoma. Their show is the third Saturday of every month at the Blue Mouse Theatre on Proctor.

And a cast in Portland, the Clinton Street Cabaret. (I bet you can guess what street their theatre is on.) I belive they have a show every Saturday and sometimes have guest casts perform. (The VTC preform there ever other month, check out our website for more info, more VTC guest performances and appearances, as well as links to other cast websites.)
K-Lyn Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

Ah...the Clinton! So many Saturday nights spent there in high school.

I kept having to explain to people that it really wasn't about the movie!

Michael (foof) Maki Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
Goodness. You're like the mayor's wife, or something. ;-)
stealthlori · 20 years, 8 months ago
I went a few times in college. Never really got into all the theatrics/audience participation, but we used to play the soundtrack a LOT. For some bizarre reason my mother bought us the video one year as an anniversary present (w. t. F??????) so we occasionally watch it Halloween night at home.
nate... · 20 years, 8 months ago
thankfully.

Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 8 months ago
It is early in the voiting but I'm suprised that less that half the people have seen it. He'll I haven't seen it in 20 years but I've seen it six times. Jill and I listened to the soundtrack and compared how the audience dialogue has changed in that time on the way home from the Fru-B-Que. I actually know a great deal of the lyrics. That was before my brain went south.
Prinut · 20 years, 8 months ago
I was going to last year but I wasn't 18 (and I'm still not 18) so I couldn't. Its very sad because I really really want to see it.
Michael (foof) Maki Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
Umm... Where do you have to be 18 to see RHPS? Seems to me, most times that I've gone, most of the audience (and some of the cast) were younger than 18...
danced with Lazlo Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
yeah, I started when I was 15.
Bender Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
17, here.
meh · 20 years, 8 months ago
shoot...i've seen it more than 200 times...if you count all of the times i've performed in it as well. but since the movie is playing while we perform, i think it counts. :)

and yes, i feel it is very, very sad that the majority that have taken this poll are still virgins.
emilie is CRANKY · 20 years, 8 months ago
who needs rocky horror when you can have 3-D bad 70's pr0n? :D
lawrence Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
oh god, that's probably the same movie they showed at CMU one year. with the glasses and everything. and they got the usual complaints from the conservative groups saying their activities fee money shouldn't pay for it (never mind the fact that the rest of our activities fee money funds said conservative groups, too) but it turned out that the movie cost them $100 to rent and they sold out 4 showings of 475 seats at $1 a ticket.
Andrew Lange Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

I think we got the same one at Northwestern as well, only ours ended up in riots when it sold out and they stopped letting people in.

goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

sheryls Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
i know! i didnt even like scanning them back in. i mean. god knows at what point they put the tape back in the case.
lawrence · 20 years, 8 months ago
I suffered through the movie once on video. I see no reason to subject myself to it again.
meh Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
it is a horrible movie. most cult classics are.

but it really is completely different seeing it in the theatre with the actors, call backs, etc. you haven't really experienced the movie until you've gone to the threatre to see it.
lawrence Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
I know a lot of people who participated in it when I was in college. And from everything they told me about it, I became even less interested in even considering going.
nate... Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
yeppers.. same here.
Bender · 20 years, 8 months ago
just deflowered my first virgin.

had to guilt him into going.

he was quite delighted when things were thrown.\

and when I got soaked.
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
i deflowered my first virgin last year. funfunfun.

i've only seen it live twice--once in baltimore, and once here in chicago. someday, i would love to be in a production (rocky horror show, not the movie--i'd rather get to talk and sing for myself) and play janet.
Bender Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
I've always done Magenta (in our living room production), but I have a fondness for Columbia. And Riff-Raff. But I really don't like female Franks, even though I love the role. And our Riff, too ;P

See the Toronto cast, man.
meh Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

Some of the best Franks I've seen have been female. Our last Frank, who is also female, has won contests at conventions for being such a rockin' Frank. My best friend is our Frank and used to be our Columbia. :)

I mostly Magent, of course. Though I have played Riff, Janet, Rocky and Crim. (not to mention TrixieandTranny.)

angelmusicmaven Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

Yeah... you ARE Magenta to me!! Though you know why I'm glad you have access to the gold shorts!!! *GIGGLE*

oh man, the first time I saw it they'd put it on at my college, and Frank was played by the most well known gay guy on campus. He was great. Then the second time I saw it with another guy Frank. He was **beautiful** . MAN, hachacha!!! Those are so emblazoned in my memory I can't even fathom actually seeing a girlFrank.

I do like the movie "Connie and Carla" though *clearing throat*

meh Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
i didn't tell you that i wore the gold shorts a few shows ago.

and i didn't wash them beforehand. ;)
Josh Woodward · 20 years, 8 months ago
Once. And that's how it will remain.
dirty life & times · 20 years, 8 months ago
but three times on video. i just go with what opportunities arrive.
It's a girl! · 20 years, 8 months ago
That should have been an option.

not that it would apply to me, mind you. i've seen it about six or seven times in the theater, a bunch of times on video, and once on stage in fredneck.

and i deflowered carey!
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
w00t!
Doktor Pepski, kommie · 20 years, 8 months ago
and it really was too much!
angelmusicmaven · 20 years, 8 months ago
looks like a lot of people don't get it and don't want to. HATERS!!! ;);) That's ok... I'm bored by all the LOTR stuff so *definitely* to each his own...
I'm in the seen-it-a-few-times camp.... super fun in the theatre. Chicagoans... we should try to see it sometime when it's at the Music Box, that would be SOOOO hyper!
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
i agree. i really dug the midnight madness cast.
Michael (foof) Maki Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
Absolutely. Although I think that I, as a friend of Andrew, will be physically unable to ever actually meet Angel. ;-)
angelmusicmaven Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

Absolutely. Although I think that I, as a friend of Andrew, will be physically unable to ever actually meet Angel. ;-)

Hahaha... for REAL!!! Well, it's never too late.... 7/17, Down the Line's playing at one of those friggin' street festivals (I never remember which one is which but they're ALL by an el or bus) they're playing from 3-5 in the afternoon. That would be a nice place to converge. Of course I have to get a train back home to see another show that night... but it's an idea :):):):) Otherwise... we can keep trying!!!! *hugs*

meh · 20 years, 8 months ago
wow...i almost forgot about that.
heh...i have the scanner...now where are those pictures?
meh Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
there is also a banana shot...
Rimbo · 20 years, 8 months ago
Never gone. Wouldn't mind, I guess. But I suppose I look too much like Meatloaf to have some sort of choice as to who I'd be . . .
