I've been to two shows recently that were totally or primarily instrumental and wish I went to more.

On who's playing it, I mean. Really good, innovative, brave, exciting instrumentals I adore, like Chris Thile's solo album "Not All Who Wander Are Lost" (because it BLOWS YOUR MIND!!!!!). However, some people play just to hear themselves play, and don't offer anything new.
That could be another poll, does anyone like the radical atonal stuff? It leaves me cold.

I loooved seeing bela fleck and the flecktones... and they were completely instrumental.
(note I said "loved".. past tense... they then made the huge mistake of letting future man sing... and... they've sucked ever since.) But yeah... they used to put on an AMAZING show. Then you have bands like Soul Coughing.. and Phish... who are effectively instrumental... since the lyrics are just nonsense for the most part... so the vocals tend to just be another instrument. :)

It has to be damn good to hold my attention. And I couldn't really listen to a full show without lyrics no matter how good it was. I like things better when the voice is used as an instrument, as in Sigur Rs and the like. It's the most expressive "instrument" out there, and music tends to be boring without it.
And I tend to dig classical music because the arrangements are complex enough to hold interest without words.
Go see Bela with Edgar Meyer. That is the show that inspired me to make this thread.
