This one's primarily for the completists out there -- it's not a particularly interesting show, given that it's a festival show; and it's not a particularly good sounding show either. If you listen closely, you can hear Hootie & the Blowfish performing on the main stage while Frvous is on the "folk stage" buried in the back of the Speedway.

At the NYC Fleadh, Fruvous was scheduled to go on at the same time as Hootie too. But, then the main stage line-up changed, and they were up against Elvis Costello. As I recall, Jian opened the show with:

"First of all, f*ck all of you for not going to see Elvis Costello!!! Second... you guys are f*cking awesome for coming to see us instead of Elvis Costello!!!"

They were pretty pissed themselves, cause they wanted to see that show. I know they sang something in his honor - it might've been Allison.

Speaking of pissed, that festival was the worst-run least pleasurable festival I've ever been too. It was extremely hot, but since it was sponsored by Guiness, the promoters were encouraging people to drink more beer. Also speaking of pissed, the frat-boy Hootie fans were willing to oblige. I will not discuss the condition of the sparse port-o-potties.

Despite that, it was my most fish-girlie show experience. Major Jian eye contact. As I've said before, had I been wearing a bra, I would've thrown it onstage.

had I been wearing a bra, I would've thrown it onstage.

Perhaps this was the reason for the eye contact in the first place?

Yeah, Chicago was the same way. When I think of blisteringly hot days spent in the sun, I think of chugging fermented bread.

It was massively muddy in Chicago, too; I seem to remember Donna and I spending about a day and a half just waiting to get to the front gate, and then once we were inside it was all of about thirty seconds until we were covered in mud up to our knees.

Still... Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Martin Sexton, Fruvous, and a few other groups (one group, can't remember the name, was on the VH1 stage mid-day wearing full-on wool suits with all the trimmings. Props for the dedication, and the music was pretty good too. Too bad I can't remember their name) made for an entertaining lineup.

But I came to the conclusion long ago that, given the choice between:

  1. a 45 minute set from someone I like followed by a 90 minute set by someone I love; and
  2. six half-hour sets of people I love

I'll take the former every time.

Not unlikely. But i was a lot skinnier (ie less boobbier) back then.

Maybe you should have thrown your shirt onstage? :)

Hahaha... wildbill and I and our group got within about a mile of Elvis Costello... but it was barely audible... we ended up heading to Fruvous's stage (because hey, Luka Bloom was playing over there at that time) after some drunk in front of us set up 2 garbage cans to cover his midsection and whipped it out to do his business rather than waiting in the outhouse lines. Uh... yeah.

Could some kind person please re-seed this for me? I haven't had a chance until today to download it.

Thanks!

Sorry, I took mine down in an effort to hear a few webcasts cleaner yesterday (no luck, of course :-) ). It's back up.
