Allright . . . .this is one of my favorite songs by Frvous. And yet I am not always clear what it is "about." Well, actually I have many interpretations for the lyrics, and can understand the verses. The sticking point is how horseshoes work into the song! I have a lot of ideas about what this song means, but I wanted to hear other people's thoughts.

Tell me your thoughts, other people. :)

I think somewhere in there is something about how if you keep handing the power over to other people to decide your destiny, you get screwed. You give out horseshoes...but in the end they're just going to throw them because that's what you do with horseshoes and once you give them away it's not your choice anymore.

You give your sister the reins, she crashes your train.

You give your mate free reign and they never come back. ( I very much don't agree with this one but it's what the lyrics seem to say.)

Anywhoo...that's my interp. You give up control of your own destiny, then you pretty much get stuck with the consequences if people don't do what you want them to.

See, I thought it was more like at some point you have to take chances. You can have all this great stuff but if you just hold on to your pile of horseshoes you're never going to win the game. You've gotta toss the horseshoes at the stake and you may miss but if you don't try what's the point?

I guess that sounds more optimistic than I think the song really is but that's about as close as I can get right now. Maybe more tomorrow.

i would add also that the song seems to imply that you knowwhat's going to happen, yet you do it anyway -- the epitome of self-destructive, victim-playing behavior. that's where "look straight at the coming disaster/realize what you've lost" comes in. it's a present realization of the inevitable future consequences that YOU are initiating with YOUR choices now.

in a slightly different but no less bleak interpretation, I see the verses as a progression of self-awareness, from a guileless child casually victimized by another kidwith a little more experiencein the art of the deal, to a fully cognizantadult standing his ground or holding to his convictionsor offering his best attempt ata "fair deal", knowing full well that the results probably will be painful because by and large the world isn't fair.If you play fair or stand on your principles or are trustworthy and extend trust to other people, you givethem weapons to use against you(horseshoes), and human nature makes it almost inevitable thatsomeone will use them. But once you're aware of the conflict between your principles and a desired result,("i dreamed i went to heaven 'cause i told my lover lies"), if you diminish your risk and expectation and attitude of trust in order to feel "safe" and avoid pain, you extinguish your dearest hopes forgenuine happiness, and your finest instincts. (verse 3).

it's a dark dark song, and i love it.

"i dreamed i went to heaven 'cause i told my lover lies"

Did we ever determine the causality of this line? ;-)
