Poll: So what do you think? |
Discussion:
Problem? Solution.
I was just thinking about that this morning. If the government got the hell out of the marriage business, we wouldn't have this problem. I haven't thought it through yet, but it seems completely reasonable.

It depends how they meant it but I'll take it as brilliant.

This is absolute genius. I said it out loud when I saw this on television yesterday. This clarifies the issue is 'equal treatment under the law' by temporarily suspending a right to everyone - equally.

well, now I think it's a good idea as a statement, but something else needs to be done for a permanent solution. the problem comes in when your partner in that county is injured or dies or whatever. that person somehow should be able to make medical decisions, etc. as their next of kin. then you get into health insurance and all of that. marriage seems like a fairly simple way to make those sorts of determinations. defining marriage as a legal commitment between two adults regardless of gender seems like it would take care of that.
i'm still baffled as to why people oppose marriage between people of the same sex. the objections i've heard are of a religious nature, and while people are certainly entitled to their own beliefs, marriage is a legal contract. that seems to fall under separation of church and state.
