A Cappella Recommendations
or, you know, you could sing a *good* song...:)
fact: one of the reasons i quit my former a cappella group was the other women's obsession with "java jive."

One of my college friends who was in an a cappella group performed a lovely rendition of Galileo by Indigo Girls.
yeah, we sang that, too. (by "we" i mean whim 'n rhythm, my former but still beloved a cappella group.) we also sang ani's "you had time," which is one of my favorite pieces of ours (too bad it was an alto solo, man). ummm, some jazz standard type stuff (my fave was "love me or leave me," but we also did "lady is a tramp" and "black coffee", among others), some more current numbers ("time after time," tracy chapman's "the promise," "millwork" from the musical working)... but i *really* wanted someone to arrange "tanglewood tree" as a duet, particularly after hearing the chris & meredith thompson version. too bad i don't know anything about arranging, and no one else had time. alas.
Do you have an audio file of the rendition of tracy champman's "the promise"? My bro (who is the Coast Guard Academy Choir) has an mp3 acapella version of that song on his gf's computer, and I wonder where he got it from.

ok...here are a few things that one of our school's acapella groups does and are really awesome:
-Wading in the Velvet Sea (by Phish...it can be arranged with all the background music as cool vocals) -Girly Shanty (by Sons of the Never Wrong...check this song out, it's feminist fun in a bucket, and it's wayy upbeat!) -Hyperballad (Bjrk...she's so cool!) ok...here are some things that i think would make AWESOME chick acapella songs: -New James Bond (sung by EFO...it's a bonus track on Big Noise) -a vocal version of Hoedown from Rodeo (Copland baby!) -Goodbye Earl (the Dixie Chicks)
really?? i think it's funny. not as a serious song...but it's cute...esp. for a cute acapella encore.
eeeee! i adore the girl shanty. i'm finally going to see the sons for the first time next week.
i was going to arrange "glass figurine" by andrew bird's bowl of fire for my a cappella group, before it became a big ol' festival of "java jive." :P
ooh...i've never heard any of their other songs...are they good?
yesyes. i think it's pete kennedy who calls them a cross between fruvous and dave & tracy. check out their site.
That's what Pete said to me and he didn't know I was a Fruhead.

My favorite a capella CD is "Thom Yorke's A Capella Christmas".
(I joke, but I have to admit the Brown Derbies' cover of "Karma Police" was pretty good)
are people not reading joolee's question? she's not asking for listening recommendations, she's looking for ideas for songs her women's a cappella group can perform.
boyz II men actually did have some good a cappella stuff, but remember, she also requested "nothing too low." :)
