So... I didn't see the discussion on the wall, and probably this has already been brought up, but I just wanted to put in my two cents about why I think it might actually be appropriate for a company to deny domestic partnership benefits to heterosexual couples that they might offer to homosexual couples. The thing is... these are benefits that they want to give to married couples. They don't want to be handing them out willy-nilly to every person's boyfriend or girlfriend (and would probably go broke if they did), so they draw a line. Couples who are willing to make a legal committment to each other, they will make this committment to. This, however, excludes their homosexual employees, simply because they can't legally marry in this country... so the company tries to craft a policy to make up for this somewhat, the idea being that they can apply their married-couple benefits to long-term same-sex domestic partners. It isn't perfect, because the situation is imperfect, but they are doing what they can with what they have to work with, legally. I can absolutely understand why a company might draw a line at this point.
