Syndicated Radio Shows

There are some great syndicated radio shows. Which do you listen to?

• Car Talk: My favorite. Ostensibly it is two guys giving advice about cars but in reality it is the funniest hour on radio.


• American Routes - music show based in the New Orleans


• Thistle and Shamrock - Celtic Music


• What do you know? - Funny game show


• Shickele Mix - Peter Shickele's funny and educational take on classical music.


• Beale Street Caravan- The music of Memphis

a prairie home companion, the midnight special (the chicago version, but there's also a nationally syndicated version), selected shorts, and stuff like schickele mix, car talk, le show, and the others when we remember they're on.

I was going to say, Don't mention Prairie Home Companion! aka the Devils own radio show.

"Car Talk" is great, but I have to disagree on "What do you know?" I do not find the host funny at all. I'm more of a "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me" fan.

Alistair Cooke has been sending out his weekly Letter from America for half a century now and I am happy that it is syndicated to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. That blessed network also endlessly repeats programs from the BBC like My Word and The Goon Show. All in all a nice refuge from the dross the shock jocks dish up on the commercial stations.

Letter from America�also shows up on the BBC World News sometimes - WNYC plays it for a few hours at over night.

I absolutely love "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, The NPR News Quiz" - my thumbnail has been their logo for a few weeks now.

The Next Big Thing - a WNYC culture magazine that was recently picked up by PRI

Bill Radke's Radio Rewind - "a not so serious look back at the week in review" was recently dropped by PRI, and is now only broadcast locally around Seattle, in a call-in-show format.�

Definitely Not The Opera - The CBC Radio One show that I never would have known about had Rachel Barecca not done a documentary about Frucon IV for them.� Jian does entertainment reviews, but they're never part of the "DNTO on Demand" archive on the website, so you have to catch it broadcast on Saturdays.� Luckily, since Canada has so many time zones, if you miss it on Radio One Halifax you can catch it on Radio One Winnipeg!

ThirdcoastFestival.org is Chicago Public Radio's collection of International radio stories.� Radiolab is WNYC's similar project.� I learned about ABC through them, and sometimes listen to their programmes.

On The Media is a news-watching news program that is way way waaaay more interesting than their name suggests.

If you can't tell, I adore Radio shows.�

i've been listening to prarie home companion on and off for ..gads ... well over 10 years now i think.� sometimes it's hit and miss, but more often than not it's just plain good fun.

car talk cracks me up.� every time.� i can't stop laughing at those two yahoos.

I can't believe no one has mentioned This American Life, consistently the best, most thought-provoking hour on radio.

I also listen to APHC (as a Minnesotan, I'm required by statute to put in a plug for it), Loveline (yes, Jaci, it's still on... I listen to it almost every night). Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, Cartalk, and pretty much *anything* syndicated by PRI.

One show I really miss is Mountain Stage which apparently doesn't get covered by the shitty public radio stations here in Chicago. They're apparently too busy playing ::koff:: Jazz from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. to bother with any really quirky shows. I **really** miss Minnesota Public Radio.

i'm surprised nobody's mentioned david dye's world cafe from wxpn. i've discovered so much good music by listening to that show.

I can't believe that I didn't mention Mountain Stage. I listen every week.

To put some Fruvous content in here, Fruvous actually appeared on Mountain Stage a few times. I'm pretty sure they were on World Cafe too and are on one of their compilation CDs. Car talk played Get in the Car.

Oh. I see now that Jaci *did* mention This American Life Sorry, Jaci.

Hrm.. too bad Amazon Country isn't syndicated.� That's a lovely show.
