Favorite Musicals

I know there are lots of fans of musical theatre here. What are you favorites? Here are some of mine.

• West Side Story
• Porgy and Bess
• Pirates of Penzance
• The Mikado
• Camelot

The Mikado is not a musical, it is an operetta.

well, and you can make the argument that a lot of the musicals listed on here (phantom, les mis, etc), are actually operas.

Porgy and Bess was intended to be an Opera and I saw it produced as one at the Met. It still is usually produced as a musical so I decided to be liberal in my classification.

• Fiddler on the Roof (mmmmmmmmdancing)
• The Producers (Hurt my tummy to laugh)
• Phantom of the Opera (mmmmmmmusic)
• Rocky Horror (Awful, I know. No quality whatsoever. But the movie is so fun.)

In terms of film musicals you cannot beat the mGm classics like

Singing in the Rain, Easter Parade, Showboat, Gigi (maybe not so much but I refer to it in one of my poems), On the Town, any Fred and Ginger one and oh the musicals the musicals...so many good quality songs.

Also we can never forget Bugsy Malone

If we are talking film musicals what about the The Wizard of Oz?

when the music box started doing "singalong wizard of oz" here, one reporter brought up a good point: that apart from "over the rainbow," the songs aren't really that memorable. i guess you could make a case for "if i only had a brain/heart/the nerve," but the rest of them are, like, aggressively forgettable and lame. :)

How about Follow the yellow brick road and We're off to see the Wizard?

The irony is that they almost cut Rainbow because they thought it slowed the movie down to much.

I can remember those lyrics, it gets points for that.

oh! wizard of oz also gets points for the best music ever: the wicked witch of the west's theme.

other than that I hate most Musicals...Hedwig was ok

• Les Miserables (my favorite of the Brit invasion...cry everytime)
• The Producers (genius, just genius)
• Into the Woods

• Gypsy (My first Broadway musical and still a favorite...saw it with Tyne Daly)
• The Who's Tommy

Damn, I thought this was going to say Give My Regards to Broad Street. A rather cheesy Paul McCartney movie that I love nonetheless. :) Great soundtrack.

It has such a horrible message! If you don't get the guy, become a slut who smokes! That, and it's just evil.

Phantom of the Opera.

What other musicals have you seen? Any live productions?

The only musicals that I've seen live that I didn't like at all were A Chorus Line and Marilyn. An interesting note Scott Bakula starred in Marilyn.

Not that you were asking me directly, but.. I finally broke down and went to see "Phantom" in London, and was bored. The actors looked bored. They seemed to have the attitude "We've done this show 10,000 times and we're just tired of it, and it's a Tuesday night so we're just phoning in this performance". I can't think of a Broadway/West End musical that I've enjoyed less.

However I can understand the opinion "Phantom=Great" "Everything Else=Sucks". A show like Phantom imight often be people's first exposure to a Broadway show and it's probably not what most people would expect of the theater. It's not Shakespeare after all. So most people probably enjoy it but don't have their minds changed on theater in general.

Phantom was just okay for me, though I did see it twice.� As soon as I realized that it was the same 6-7 tunes replayed over and over again, it became distracting.� Les Miserable is also like this, but I thought it had a more compelling story.

Hrmm....as far as musicals that I near totally disliked were Closer to Heaven (a musical by the Pet Shop Boys...what was I thinking?!?) and The Secret Garden.

Maybe you'd give the Secret Garden another listen when you realize that Dickon on the Original Broadway Cast CD, and Hedwig in Hedwig & The Angry Inch, is the same actor, John Cameron Mitchell...

on the definite hate this though is cats. ugh.

I'm not crazy about Funny Girl, but it's a silly mondegreen.

But seriously ... how can we leave out:� Hello Dolly, Sound of Music, or Bye Bye Birdie!

I mean ... pure camp at its finest!� All of them!

Other than those ... um ... Phantom, despite its heavy-on-sfx staging.�� The music *is* stupendous, despite the histrionic plot.

I Mary Poppins. It was my favorite kids movie as a kid. I cried at Feed the birds.

Hair is great. I have the vinyl of the public theatre version from before it went to broadway.

I missed out South Pacific, a musical that sensitively touches on issues of racism is definately� a rare thing, though if X-men the musical were made it would most surely be a triumph!� I also like the happy talk song....reminds me of being about 3 years old and ...well happy!

Racism was central to Finnigan's Rainbow. I never saw the show but the film was lots of fun.
