Two out of three of those are on my summer reading list for the course I'm taking. But Shopgirl is a constant favorite :)

The Brothers K - David James Duncan
A Child Called It - David Peltzer
The Only EKG book you'll ever need - Someone

Maybe not the last one, unless you're weird like me and find it very interesting.

"Mary, Called Magdelene" by Margaret George, ISBN 0670030961.

MG is one of my favorite authors. Her books about Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scots, and Cleopatra are among the best I've read.

After I finish this book, the last series in the First Man in Rome series by Colleen McCullough is waiting to be read.

After that, probably The Portable Dorothy Parker.

i'd rather go to bed with gabriel garcia marquez
Zach Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
I'm told that Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 100 Years of Solitude is wonderful.

A cook's tour is great.

Have you read Kitchen Confidential?
hkath Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Mmmm... Shopgirl.

I finished off the Complete Dorothy Parker a few months ago. It was worth going for the whole shebang... you practically sail from one end of the book to the other. Of course, then you have to read all her "hate songs", which might be edited out of the Portable Dorothy Parker. That would be an omission I would agree with.

I slogged through Love in the Time of Cholera. I thought it was pretty tedious. Lush descriptions but slow on plot development. I suppose you should read it for its Fruvous connection but I am not sure I'd recommend it otherwise. YMMV.

I like Love, but I do think Solitude is better.

As a reading freak (or is that geek?)I have to give my summer reading recommendations!

The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde (and the sequel, Lost in a Good Book)

Candy and Me (A Love Story) by Hilary Liftin

Green Grass Grace by Shawn McBride

Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs

Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn

Happiness by Will Ferguson

Small Wonder by Barbara Kingsolver

You can check out reviews for all of these on Amazon or other such sites. Most are laugh at loud funny with the exception of Small Wonder which is Kingsolver's most recent book of social essays. I hope you will enjoy!

100 Years of Solitude was fabulous. I also really liked Of Love and Other Demons by GGM. It`s not as well known as his other stuff, but still really good. It`s about a girl who gets bitten by a rabid dog, then is sent to be exercized by Clarissan nuns because they think she`s posessed. Heavy stuff

It's a girl! Back · 21 years, 8 months ago

*adds her thumbs up to The Eyre Affair, Lost In A Good Book, and Ella Minnow Pea*

It's all about English major geekage.

Harry Potter.

I know there are many more edifying reads out there but it ISsummer after all. And I wanna play!

Not yet...it's on my list tho.... I love how in Tour he kept slagging off the film crew....then best was in Russia when they had to re-shoot the entry in to the restauant becausehe wasjust to drunk to stagger up the steps....hilarious!

lawrence Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
hheh. my brother is actually spending the summer reading the entire series in order - after having finished the fifth one, that is. he's starting over. :)
nate... Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Yeah, I'd definitely recommend it.

As someone who worked kitchens for a long time... I can honestly say that I think he's the first person to really portray the attitude and environment accurately in text.
