Spirituality

   Discussion: Spirituality
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 21 years, 8 months ago
I've been thinking about two related topics, spirituality and the need to feel connected. My first question is, What is spirituality? Perhaps it is because I'm a skeptic but I really can't come up with a meaningful definition. I hear people say things like, "I'm not religious but I'm spiritual." When I ask they never can explain what they mean. Can you? The second question is do you feel the need to be connected? I think it is one of the great driving forces, for both good and evil, in the world. Thirdly, do you feel there is a connection between the concepts of spirituality and the need to feel connected?

wow...I need some more sleep first before I have a swing at this... it's really such a personal thing, I think everyone will have their own veryindividual answer.

The way I think of spiritual is believing there is a force or a being beyond our organic selves that governs the universe and acts upon those things in it. In a non-scientific way. Like, not gravity. :) And I believe being spiritual is being open to one or more of these intangible possibilities. That's why I don't believe spirituality and religion are interchangeable. A person may believe there is a god, but not believe he/she/it is the god of any of the existing religions. For spirituality, it is enough just to believe there is something beyond us.

And yeah, I think there's a connection with the need to feel connected, on some level. I've often wished that I believed in something just so I'd have that comfort. Faith brings a lot of comfort to people, I think. I would love to have something to believe in, to rely on, to keep in my heart to tell me things will be OK. But...I don't have it at this point in my life. Don't know if I ever will.

I think I agree with most of this.

I have no belief that there is a god... but I do believe that there is some kind of human connection... I believe in mankind... and its ablities.

I have faith... in myself... and that there is a good within everyone.

I suppose to an extent, I also believe in a force that is larger that moving, living and breathing... but I don't know that it is definitely "beyond our organic selves".
It could very well be some kind of connection that will some day be explained and documented.

That sort of sounds like what I once wrote on a picture of myself looking all introspective... "I am an atheist because I have faith...in myself"

great minds think alike, eh?

I don't even have that.

To me it always seems that spirituality was believing in something beause you want to be true not because there was any evidence for it. People don't want to think that death is permanent, that they are subject to random forces they have no control of, and that they aren't connected with the universe.

"I am an Atheist because I have faith in myself." That's it for me too. Nate, Joolie - the members of the Church of Bajesus have a mental link!

I think that would be "faith"

I actually have a deep faith in God. Nota vague "higher power" but the Judeo-Christian God-the-Father-God-the-Son-and-God-the-Holy-Spirit. Sure it may not be cool, but there are more important things than coolness, especially when you're talking about eternity.

Well, who cares what's "cool", really?
