All I have is the mix that spoiled brat :) made me.
shouldn't that be "don't like em, you insensitive clod"?

My favorite Ben Folds Five album is Unauthorized Biography... and my favorite Ben solo album is Rockin' the Suburbs. Overall, though, I love Rockin' the Suburbs most of all. It's one of my favorite albums ever. I wish it were a blanket, so I could wrap it around me. {g}

They were great before "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner" came out.... then, despite the 3 or 4 AMAZING songs... they got polluted by cheesy 70's horns.
I had some hope when Rockin' the Suburbs came out... but... it's no better. So, "anything before Reinhold" is my answer.
No. Reinhold and Suburbs are his best two albums.
Honestly, I'd say Whatever and ever is his(their) weakest. Some good songs, don't get me wrong, but the album never grabbed me as a whole. I think that's part of what I like about Reinhold, it's a full album. RTS does that too, and while the album experience isn't as complete, the songs are (generally) better.
No, because you're phrasing your statement as objective, and so mine is in counter-form.
If I said "the nields have the best voices at falcon ridge" would you respond "you may think that, but in my opinion they sound that strangled cats" or would you respond "no, they sound like strangled cats"? (of course, we all know that Nate wouldn't respond with either because the Nields are his favorite singers ever ;-) *runs off before the thrown things hit him*
yeah, but I'm responding to the first part of your post. I don't deny that you find anything pre-reinhold as your favorite, I'm saying you're wrong in the first half.
Of course all of this is pointless really, since I tend to lean towards the subjectiveist side when it comes to art (not fully though). I say "good" or "bad" because it's eaiser than explaining, but when drilled, this is all a matter of what kind of music you like.

wull, starting about two years ago, i knew i really liked them, because wildbill burnt me a bunch for my computer... i never bought any albums because i seldom have money to buy music.
this morning, oddly enough, i was listening to racermike's "whatever & ever amen"..... & i discovered it's not my favourite.

It was a tough decision between Amen and Reinhold. I think that "Amen" is a more consistently good album, but I went with "Reinhold" because of the absolute knockout opening three songs as well as the ending. But then there's self-titled, which I still remember my face being ripped off the first time I pushed play and heard "Jackson Cannery". And the solo album is great too. And Naked Baby Photos has Eddie Walker and Fannie Packs. Ugh. Decisions. :)
I was similarly conflicted, but I went with "Amen" in the end. Maybe it's nostalgia, but that album just means a lot to me and was a huge part of my life for a long time.

its one of thoes evil guilt by association things. adam made me a mix CD with all this awesome music on it all lovey songs about forever. he gave it to me on valentinesday and it thrilled me it was so sweet, and then he left me for one of my friends and I pawned his promise ring to buy sticky green so when he asked for it back (and he did) I could say I smoked it. ben folds was a key performer on said mix and I still have a hard time listening to him. whats that? do I taste something bitter?

i totally can't even remember submitting this poll. i know it was before the new eps came out (thanks for adding them, josh).
i'm always torn between reinhold and suburbs. altho the live solo cd has recordings from shows i saw, and the accompanying dvd does, too. so that always makes me happy.

Ben Folds Five--Sessions at West 54th (DVD). Nothing like a little DD5.1 surround sound!
Second to that, I'd guess Messner would be like their Sgt. Pepper and stands up as a good whole album, but there's just so many good songs on the others too.

at first glance, i thought this would be an easy question. but every single album means something different to me, from hearing "underground" in the basement-lit-by-christmas-lights of my then-crush's house back inwinter'96-'97to listening to Suburbs all the time in the post-9/11 weeks (...and ever since, of course, but that period was the most resonant). the only thing i can say is that ben folds live never really grabbed me; the john mccray duet on "fred jones part ?" was cool, as were the audience noises on "not the same," but the rest i could do without. but whoever mentioned the DVD was absolutely right. so. cool. In my house, we see by Christmas lights, and your TV, and that seems to be enough to see what we want to see. (sorry, couldn't resist)
