Should Quebec seperate?

   Discussion: Should Quebec seperate?
John J. Ryan · 21 years, 11 months ago

Since my chorus is now going to be competing at Barbershop Internationals in Montreal this summer, we have been talking about learning O Canada, in both French and English.  However, one of our members believes that the French Canadians are seperationalists and hate the US and much as England, meaning they also hate the national anthem.

So, this is a question for the Canadian Fruheads, especially those who reside in Quebec.  What is the popular opinion in Quebec on the Canadian National Anthem, and what are their general feelings towards the rest of Canada, England, and the United States?

Ok.. as I'm probably one of two (three?) active Quebecois fruheads, I feel concerned :D .. (the use of "we" is in general, not necessarily myself)

As far as I'm concerned, it's a great idea.  If you want me to call that member, lemme know, and I'll give him a piece of mind :D

But seriously.  Every Quebecois knows the anthem.  We're not all radical separatists, and there aren't that many, acctually.  We don't hate the rest of Canada.  We're a little weary of it, because we got shit from them for a long time, in the past.  It's almost all because of the language, I think.  Canada is NOT a bilingual country, never was, probably never will be.  The only really bilingual city in the country that works, is Montreal.  Anywhere else, both English and French are not co-existant without any trouble.

We've always been ignorant, sheep-like followers, too.  Never had the guts to really stand up for what we think we want.  My generation is waking up and trying to change things.

A lot of people still believe in the American Dream.  We don't hate the States.  We don't hate England.  Most people are mostly indifferent to both, or have very little opinions about either.  I'm not taking the present events into consideration, and I'm not going to.  When the world is peacefull, Quebecois people like the states a whole lot.  Some of the seperatists even want to become another state.

I'm not sure about England, but I know we don't hate it.

I'm not a seperatist.  I don't know exactly what they think.  But Quebec's seperation is very unlikely.  We can't survive on our own, and most of us realize it.

So yeah.  Go for it.  I think it's a wonderful idea :D

Heh, I could nitpick here and point out that the only "officially" bilingual province in Canada isn't Quebec - it's New Brunswick. :)

But...I think that the whole separation situation is really blown out of proportion by the media.

It's two. Definitely two. Sigh.

I say go for it too. The fact of singing the anthem in French is enough. Qubec doesn't have its own official anthem (well... not unless you count that Gilles Vigneault song (at least I think it's his song)... which I don't, because, well, everyone I know uses the changed words and sings it instead of Happy Birthday). The fact is, even the most militant separatist still understands that he or she is still residing in Canada, and will probably appreciate having the anthem sung to him or her in his or her own language.

That said, don't take the risk and start the anthem in English ;)

Actually, I'm just saying that to be funny, I don't really mean it. But look at http://www.fruvous.com/news/941004nw.html for a heads up and a bit of a laugh, John. Unless this is the article that has you doubting O Canada already.
