Discussion: Do you enjoy the SUSHI?

I love the sushi...
I love the chunks of raw fish...
I love the little eggs that pop in your mouth...
I love the sunomono salad...
I love the rolls...
I love the cones...
I love the spicy tuna...
I love the salmon...
I love the red snapper...
I love the prawn (both cooked and raw)
I love the raw beef, seared on the outside, covered in the yummi sauce...
I love the tea...

I . Love. Sushi.

ps. I also love going with big-huge groups and being the ordering nazi and ordering insane amounts of the stuff for everyone. As I'm pretty sure anyone who has gone for sushi with me has noticed... *blush* it really did just start out as economizing the ordering for the sanity of the server.

I also have a list of things which I love.  yum little popping eggs.  yum sunomono.  yum negitoro.  yum sashimi.

So I checked the "I'm hooked" option.  I WISH that I could eat it all the time.

Annika · 22 years ago

The thought eating those little round things with the black stuff, and the stuff that's not cooked, and.. Ewww!

If I were ever in relaxed setting, where I could run off and vomit if needed, I would try it.

*shudder*

I'm not in a big rush to experiment with it either.
Andrea Krause · 22 years ago

I did the "not even the tea" option because that's ALMOST where I am...and I do hate the tea. :) I don't like fish of any type, or other seafood, or seaweed, or avocado, or sweet potato, or much of anything, really. But I did find ONE piece of sushi I like. I think it's called tomago. It's an egg custard thing. It's like eating a slab of slightly sweet scrambled eggs on rice. Can't go wrong there. :)

So when we go out for sushi, Adam and Paul eat tons of the fishy uckness and I order chinese food and have my token tomago. :)

Jan Klump Back · 22 years ago
Does it count if mostly I eat the vegetarian ones?.....and the cooked fish ones. It's still very tasty.
Josh Woodward Back · 22 years ago
Mmm.. yeah, one of my favorites are the black mushroom rolls they used to have at the Y! cafeteria. Really sweet and yummy.
sheryls Back · 22 years ago

yep! tamago just means egg. and IIRC, it's thin layers of scrambled egg. i'm not sure if the egg itself has a sweetness or if you're getting the sweetness from the rice, which has rice wine vinegar and sugar in. i dunno, i never eat it when i'm out for sushi. i'm too busy stuffing tempura and tuna rolls down my throat :)

oh, and anyone correct me if i'm wrong, but i think the whole "Tomagachi" craze was like a wierd sort of pun - because tomodachi means friend, and tamago means egg. so, like, egg-friend. :) (which would be tomago no tomodachi...i think. my japanese is more than rusty. but i think they just combinedt he two similar-sounding words).

hm. dunno. i could be talking out my ass. :D

Adam Hartfield Back · 22 years ago

Tamago. And we're proud of you! :D

Me, I'll eat it all but for the baby octopus and the uni (sea urchin). Mega-gross, both of them. Ikura (salmon roe) I *heart* and *adore*.

Those of you in western MA, Li Brothers in Longmeadow has the best sushi in the area, period. Far and away superior to anything in Northampton, especially *horf* Teapot.

Mamalissa! Back · 22 years ago

I'm the only one who checked off the squishy egg option so far...I love all the non-shellfish stuff* - but Ikura is really a highlight of the meal.  So I just had to vote for it.

*I don't eat shellfish in any capacity, due to my kosherist leanings.  That includes your arthropods (shrimp, crab, lobster), your cephalopods (squid, octipus), your gastropods (snails, conch), and your bivalves (clams, oysters...).  Points for anyone who can correctly identify which of those categories barnacles belongs in.

danced with Lazlo Back · 22 years ago

I believe they are gastropods. Do I get points or am I an idiot, oh fellow kosherist?

*edit*

No wait... they are crustaceans and therefore arthropods. Right? Right?

Mamalissa! Back · 22 years ago

ding ding ding!

Barnacles are, indeed, arthropods!

inside the barnacle shell is a tiny little shrimp floating upside down and treading water, essentially kicking food into its mouth.

Now, there is also something very special about barnacles.  Male barnacles in particular.  They have the largest ratio of penis-size:body-size in the entire animal kingdom.  It's not a bad solution for an animal that reproduces through internal fertilization and also happens to be glued to one spot.

*GASP!* Andrea doesn't like Avocado?!!! Is that possible???  I loooove avocados, I peel them and eat them and.. yum!! I request them on salads, sandwiches, nacho's, fajitas, etc. etc. ANDREA! YUMMMY!! YUMMMY! :^)
Andrea Krause Back · 22 years ago
I tried them, for the sake of domestic tranquility. Didn't like 'em. :) And HATE guacamole.

I could eat sushi every day and never get sick of it. And yeah, I mean the raw stuff.
zil Back · 22 years ago
me too!! although unless you go to our local matropolous, Portland ME.... you can't really find sushi in maine... yeah we're abut 10 years behind the rest of america.
ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 22 years ago

I LOVE sushi.  I too can eat it everyday if I could afford to.  Raw, Cooked, Rolls, even the roe if I'm in the mood.  It's one of my happy indulgences.  I'd eat them in a boat, with a billy goat, I'd eat them in the rain in the dark on a train., I'd eat them in a house and with the house-mouse, I'd eat them here, I'd eat them there, I'll eat Sushi anywhere!! ;-)

danced with Lazlo Back · 22 years ago
Would you like it if I served it to you in a box, candlelight, some wine and a red-headed fox?

heh! seems all the people I eat sushi with are posting! yay! heh!

I "DO" enjoy the sushi!

mostly the raw chunks!

Michael (foof) Maki · 22 years ago
It's not that I hate sushi, or it grosses me out, or anything.  It's just that I don't find it to be a particularly good experience.  Yeah, I'll eat rolls, or sashimi, or whatever the person I'm with insists I "must try"...  But I don't really dig it, and it's far too expensive a foodstuff to do if you're not into it.
renita · 22 years ago
hee. that's funny--when I see fish eggs, I immediately think of masago(can't remember roe) and tobiko(flying fish roe)-- the really itty bitty ones... those I adore...

I'm not so fond of Ikura(salmon roe) I think it's because I'm used to eating it cooked *shrug* or maybe it's just that the eggs are soooo squishy.

I also lurve sea urchin--and if I'm in the right mood--octopus can be good... but I have to be in the right space for it.

My mom insists that these salad thingies are sushi, and not raw fish. I just can't convince her, she had a Japanese friend as a kid...

"I like the Chalet Swiss, I like the sushi 'cause it's never touched a frying pan..."

A #1 hit by a great band, I don't remember if I used that in my argument, but it probably wouldn't work. *sigh*
sheryls Back · 22 years ago

Actually, i believe that "sushi" refers to the sytle of the rice. (reaaaaaaaaally sticky with sugar and rice vinegar) there are sushi's that are very salad-looking. it's like rice, bean sprouts, egg, and other random wierd thingies in it. it's pretty good. you can buy a mix for it (just add cooked japanese rice!) at asian markets.

i cant remember what it's called - i'll ask mariko.

sheryls Back · 22 years ago

oh, oh oh i found it.

  • chirashi(-zushi) -- assorted raw fish and vegetables over rice
  • and the raw fish is optional.

    Back · 22 years ago

    my friend jen eats that!

I can't be bothered with the rice.."fish please"

     Sushi

Everywhere you look you will see
    Signs promoting "Sushi."
Please explain it, I just don't get it,
What is with this trendy new habit?
It is raw fish right from the sea.
I do not know about you
But that is disgusting to me.
You could filet it, bake it,
Or fry it in a pan, serve it raw,
    NO THANK YOU MA'AM!
They make it look like fancy fare,
But hey it is raw fish you are eating there!
People must love it, because it is every place,
Just do not put it anywhere near my plate.
If it makes you happy, and it is what you like,
Then by all means dig right in and take a big bite.
