Jian hosting "Great Canadian Dream" TONIGHT!
Hi all!
I've been hearing Radio add for "Great Canadian Dream" with Jian hosting from Vancouver (like a CBC version of American Idol)
The ads say it's on CBC television, the musicians will do their thing, and Canada gets to pick who wins!
It starts today, Jan 22, and every Wednesday for 5 weeks!Take a peek

that's 8pm
EST

*hugs*

Also, Lisa Bills (who manages The Supers) has a band in this as well called Sully. :)
Like American Idol except for talented people... and people who can write their own stuff, rather than singing terrible pop stars' terrible songs... off key...
*do I sound like Simon? Sometimes I even like that guy*
Why couldn't someone here in America do a show with people writing their own songs? That would rock. Until then, American Idol will be no better than Puttin' On The Hitz or Dance Fever with Adrian Zmed.
is it a good thing or a bad thing that I have no idea what any of those things are?
Certainly a good thing. The world is a better place since those two shows left the air.
And I just dated myself by remembering those shows.
John - you do know that Puttin' On the Hitz was lip-synching, right?
Simon was on The Daily Show last night - very very funny. He admitted that Jon Stewart had "a modicum of talent." Jon said that all he ever hoped for.
I said American Idol was no better than Puttin' On The Hitz knowing FULL WELL that Puttin' On The Hitz was lip-syncing. :)
well, AI and all this other stuff... plus the revival of star search... geez... oh well, it's probably more entertaining than another bad sitcom...
and OMG, adrian zmed is SO hot. :D
Emilie, are you a Grease 2 fan? :)
o/~ we're gonna scooooooooooooore tonight.....o/~ [/dancing in the bowling alley]
I grew up with Grease 2! I must have seen that film 50 billion times on HBO as a kid.
ahh two of my fave shows from my pre-teen and teen years. :)
However Denny Terrio was also on Dance Fever and the first host. I think more well known (to fans of the show) than Adrian Zmed in his Pre- TJ Hooker days. (Terrio has also appeared in Buffalo at the World's Largest Disco).
eh. i *love* simon cowell. at least he has taste!! :)

hehehehe, I loved American Idol last night.. SImon's the only part I like!
I saw the beginning of the show...I have to say I was not particularily impressed.
And seeing that girl from Peppersands on the panel made that panel lose all credibility in my mind. *shudder*
The thing is...I really dislike all these "make your music dream come true come win this contest" shows and things...mainly because I've been personally burned by them far too many times, so it kinda opens up a wound. I know that's no reason to dislike them, but...yeah. When I was 10 until I was about 12 I entered all sorts of those contests...once I made it to the final round, then I got squashed. meh.
I can't imagine the pressure these people who tryout for these shows have on them. Especially now with the AI tryouts. 50,000 people trying out for only 320 finalist spots? Waiting for two days, in the cold (In cold weather cities), to sing at your best without truly being warmed up, as well as being psychologically out of mind knowing you used up 48 hours of your life for a stupid 1 minute audition that you may already have lost because of your looks or demeanor, regardless of your voice? It has to be a lot to shoulder for the auditionees.
That being said, the people who do survive have a lot going for them. However, those who do survive probably already have an extensive background in performing, so it's going to be difficult to have someone who never performed in front of anyone beyond friends and family make it to the finals.
They played some of the REALLY BAD auditionees on the radio this morning. Some were obviously nervous out of their mind, although some sounded like they WANTED to be bad to get on TV. As in you couldn't sing that badly unless you tried to, let alone have anyone convince you have what it takes to waste 2 days of your life to audition for the show.
Just some thoughts. Fame and stardom is a drug, no doubt about it, and the people who wanted to be on the show wanted it REAL bad.
It's nice to know that Kelly Clarkson had a record deal before appearing on AI. So the real "nobodys but have talent and NEED that record deal" had a chance in this contest.
When will networks realize they can't fool the public with this garbage?
The great ratings that AI has been getting have shown that we are indeed a country of fools.
..not to mention that "the song" was already written, the studio lined up, and the release date set *before* they had a winner. It was a manufactured "hit" before it was even recorded. Then they had the two finalists record the tune, and the winner's was the one the was released. They just need to slot someone in - it doesn't matter who it is. The image and look is more important. And the two finalists have even made a movie - I mean, how awful is that?
and they complained about the Monkees and Milli Vanilli.
What's wrong with this picture?
:)
Did anyone see it, or tape it?
any good?
Did he handle the show well?
any cat fights?
good Canadian fun abound?
~J~
He was an excellent host and the show was quite good. The artists were from all kinds of music - pop, rock, funk, even a string quartet. Nice to see a show involving actual up-and-coming musicians instead of crappy wannabes. ;)

cool!
will they have several winners for each music style, or just one Canadian prize at the end?
The info I read wasn't too clear.
Glad he did a good job! can't wait until Wednesday!
Were you Impressed with our Vancouver talent?
As far as I know, there is just one winner at the end. But I think the acts are doing it for the exposure mainly.
I loved the band Ten Ways From Sunday that performed - they were great! (Wanna guess who I voted for? *g*)
Personally, I prefered the pop/jazz/whatever they were band "MLE". I thought they rocked and they have some real potential. I still say it's hard to judge a competition that includes so many different genres of music. But it's a good concept, even if one of the judges -was- that annoying girl from the "Pepper Sands".
Jian did really well, even if he -did- call Vancouverites "Treehuggin' Granola Eaters."
I like the whole idea of having all these types of music - everyone's free to vote for their favourite.
And you *are* treehuggin' granola eaters... ;)
