Con Activities

Ok folks, the con is approaching it is only like a month away. We have the room booked, we'll have a tv and a vcr and some tapes, (excerpts from the energy videos will be shown this year) but other than that there are no plans. If you want some kind of planned activity--open mic, weakest link, etc--YOU will have to plan it. Start talking!

I believe that Open Mic is pretty much assumed that it will take place. Weakest Link is also something that was very successful, so I say let's keep that up too. But anything else?

Open Mic isn't too difficult. I guess I can be in charge of that, especially since I'm bringing the equipment for it. (Only one microphone).

So, knowing this, I should probably post a sign-up sheet somewhere. People who want to sign up for Open Mic, please e-mail me or frum with the song you'll be performing and the people performing it.

I'd be willing to organize The Weakest Link (ie, write questions, arrange a host(who could also be me if nobody has his or her heart set on it), what-have-you). could somebody from the committee frum me if that's alright. I'll just have a few questions about how to keep score and if there is anything else i need to do. Hopefully there will be people out there to give Drea a run for her money in the returning champion field.

If you're interested in episodes of >Play or the Heritage Heroes show (Canadian history show where Fruvous did a song in snippets called Massive Plethora of Heroes) let me know and I'll make up a tape for y'all. I also have the segments they did for Treehouse TV (children's network).

If you'd like to do the questions for Weakest Link, please... feel free!! I've got everything else under control, the timing and points and stuff, but will need some volunteers.

AJ, you want me to bring the video I won last year, right? We also need 'the gong'.

You can bring it Kelley, or I can make another one. Kath has the gong if we want to do it that way. I love the concept, but I'm not sure how into the gong show thing anyone else is. If we do do that again this year some people need to come up with some sillier, more gongable acts.

The gong was kinda our timer for WL last year, remember? To signal end of round... but we can bring something else that makes a loud, obnoxious noise.

I had some thoughts on movie night:

I'm not sure too many people are into the buffy marathon thing. I think we should stick to movies. Here are the suggestions I've heard so far:

-John Cusak films (I'm into that)
-Austin Powers (I've got Goldmember on DVD)
-Office Space (I have on VHS)
-Star Wars, Spaceballs, Monty Python

Here some ideas I'd like to throw in the hat:

-Strange Brew (I could steal the DVD from my boyfriend)
-South Park the movie
-Canadian Bacon (I've never actually seen this movie, but I thought since I'm on the Canadian theme...)

I just made reservations for my room and I was wondering if anyone wanted to do any songs with a bass player. I'll be bringing my Spector and my amp this year, but I don't know any Fruvous bass parts. Are there any songs anyone is interested in doing? Learning wouldn't be a problem, I'd just like to know so I can have them down cold.

Hey, i can send you my complete Fruvous songbook! You can learn a lot of the songs from that, and you'd be GREAT to have for the sing-along.

And, this is key, please learn the bass lines to Michigan Militia and Boo Time.

Has anyone thought about a raffle this year? I dunno how easy it'll be to get prizes this year but it's always been fun in the past so it'd be nice to continue if possible. I dunno if I want to fully volunteer to take it on but if someone wants to give me a few pointers or take me on as a helper I'd be happy to do it!
I've also got various >PLAY episodes, The Great Canadian Music Dream as well as a few appearances that Jian's made on Open Mike with Mike Bullard and such...if anyone's interesed in those. I can bring the tape I won at Con tlast year to. Just let me know=)

Definitely bring your Play tapes. I am sure some people will want to see those. Also Mike Bullard would be good too. If you guys who won those tapes last year bring them, that would save me the trouble of dubbing them again, so I'd appreciate that. (They aren't straight dubs, some editing is involved).

As far as a raffle goes, honestly I don't know where we'd get prizes. I think Jian is just about tapped out, and in any case since we've not really done much planning this year and haven't been staying in touch with him, I think it would be kind of weird to even ask.

I suppose we could buy some frucon merch to raffle off, but I'm not sure that is really worth it. Also I think you might actually be on your own with that, because I'm not sure any committee member is willing to take it on.

Sab, let me know what you are bringing - I'm in the midst of copying stuff to tape for con....the tapes I'm making could be given away afterwards to. :)

Is there any point in a new comer going to this? The posts in the forum suggest that it will be mostly folks reliving 'old times'.

There are a million good reasons for a newcomer to come. You get to meet a lot of very dedicated and friendly people and make a lot of new friends. You'll have a very good time, whether you've been a fan for 10 years or 10 minutes.

John can say this because like none of us knew him until last year, and now we're all his biggest fans :)

'k - I finished up on about 10 hours or so of video tapes for the con, whenever you want to play 'em. Play eps, the first 3 eps of Music Dream and some random Fruvous/Jian stuff that no one has likely seen before.

If there's no raffle plans then I will likely just give them away when con is over...

Well, we can raffle them if you want. We have raffle tix still I believe. The thing is who is going to sell them?

Also, has anyone done any work on weakest link?

I think Jillian said she was going to be writing some questions for it.

I've printed out all the old Chain Stories from the Fruvous Playground - we can pass them around to read, and if folks want to continue them, well, all the better!

The bad news is, I can't make it to the Con. My piece of rust I call a car finally died, so I have to use my Con money for the rest of a down payment. The good news, I finally got around to buying a new car today.

Is there a time established for the official Frucon to start? What about Movie Night?

Movie Night will start sometime Friday night,don't know when. Frucon starts on Sat. at 10 AM.
