Thoughts on 1st post-hiatus show?

Discussion: Thoughts on 1st post-hiatus show?
John J. Ryan · 22 years, 2 months ago
As Phish plays its first post-hiatus show tonight at Madison Square Garden, it made me think a little bit: What would be the best way for Fruvous to present themselves back to the live music world?

Where? Should it be in Toronto? Should it be NYC? Should it be Falcon Ridge?

How? Should they promote a huge "WE'RE BACK!" show at some enormous venue or do a secret show that no one knows about, perhaps under a psydonym like "Bole".

When? Probably can go with where in terms of Falcon Ridge, but should it be winter? Summer? Frucon weekend?

What? Should it be a show similar to the Opera House (Fruvous's Greatest Hits) or should it be a show of mostly or all new material (Read: "Bole" again)

Why? What would be the best reason for them to start playing again at any given moment?

They would probably play under the name "The Chia Pets Plus Dave."

Ahhh...the days of Frutripping.

Noho 1998.

I think they'll come back and when they do my guess is it will coincide with Frucon.

Back when they were still playing I was talking about them with a friend who words at the Bottom Line. He sees hundreds of performers a year. What impressed him with Fruvous is how much they enjoyed being out there, how much they enjoyed playing with each other. I don't think they can give that up forever.

My guess, IF they come back, is a large folk festival. Biggest bang for the buck. It is a sure thing that they will never tour with the kind of insane schedule that they used to do, so I think the only viable option will be places like folk festivals where they can get maximum exposure with minimum travel.

As for Frucon... I kind of doubt that. I'd love it, but I don't think that the event has as much reverence within the band as without.

I was discussing them coming back to a folk festival with some musician that knew them. I forgot which one. He said that is the one thing that won't happen. There isn't enough money in that.

I agree AJ. I like the idea of a large folk festival. First of all, they get to see a lot of their performing friends again and jam with them. Secondly, the event won't be JUST about them, they'll only be a part of it. They won't feel so weighted down in that regard, or pressured.

Hmmm. Not great pay, but very good for disc sales. I guess it depends on what the financial strategy is. It seems to me that if they decide to come back that disc sales will be a much larger element of their business plan, because I really don't think they'll ever tour with the ferocity that they used to. They did it for 8 years, and I just don't see them going back to that.

I don't think Fruvous are really about the money, though. if they were to do shows again, it would be because they wanted to play and wanted fans to enjoy their shows, not because they wanted/needed the money.

the folk festivals would be ideal for them, especially if they don't want to go back to the touring schedule they had from 1993-2000 - it allows the maximum number of people to see them at the fewest number of shows.

If they do (I keep telling myself they will... they will...), they should do a big one. A tiny, not known one seems... unfair?

Also, playing some of the Fruhead songs would be faboo. Chad Maloney's is the shiznittlebang... no offense to the other song-ed ones.
