Mixed CD help

   Discussion: Mixed CD help
Zach · 19 years, 10 months ago
Okay, I know some of you will be able to help me out here. I'm making a CD for my friend, Hilly, who is going to London in about a week. I'm trying to give it a sort of long-distance theme, and I'm sure it won't be too awkward if it ends up being love songs. I'll just add the word platonic to them. Any suggestions?

Transatlanticism by Death Cab For Cutie. Don't even worry about mixing it with other songs. Just repeat it 10 times.

Dude. Words out of my mouth. You could even just BUY her the cd -- it's all about the distance between people.
Josh Woodward Back · 19 years, 10 months ago
Amen. The whole damn CD is brilliant.

Dave Van Ronk has an album and song "For All My Friends In Far-Flung Places." It is actually a cover of a Jane Voss song.

'Atlantic' by EFO

also '20,000 Hearts' is another appropriate one by them.

another i'd suggest is '3,000 miles' by Ellis Paul.

and, of COURSE, there's -always- 'leavin on a jet plane'...teehee!!!

Zach Back · 19 years, 10 months ago
Heh...I definitely put Atlantic on first. ^_^

there's "latitude" off of "made in england" which sometimes does it for me.

dirty life & times · 19 years, 10 months ago
& my personal "being away from everyone" song was always "why don't you write me?" by simon & garfunkel.

on the whole "writing" song topic, there is "wrting to reach you" by travis. or you coul always include "500 miles" by the proclaimers. awful song but it is about long distances.

siobhan's a londoner · 19 years, 10 months ago
Another idea would be the great songs that namecheck London and London locations ("Lonon Calling", "Wateloo Sunset"...) or the hot new bands coming out of London right now like The Libertines or South. (Though sadly Pete has left the Libertines forever as he fights his own emons and they are weaker live without his screaming vocal...oh well)
Zach Back · 19 years, 10 months ago
Hahahaha. Great minds. I've put "London Calling", 'Werewolves of London', and 'Clark Gable' ("I was waiting for a cross-town train in the London underground...") on the CD so far. Thanks :-)
Rimbo Back · 19 years, 10 months ago
Oooh. Speaking of London songs, there's "New Frontier" by Counting Crows. It's all about London and how it's distanced from the US.
Zach Back · 19 years, 10 months ago
Unfortunately, Hilly loathes Counting Crows. Otherwise, that would definitely be on there.
Rimbo Back · 19 years, 10 months ago
Well, dang. Maybe she doesn't deserve a mix cd. : )

"London Still" by The Waifs.
It's a distance song too, so bonus. (At least, I think of it as a distance song)

"Taking it All To Tennessee" by Vance Gilbert - if you want a bitter platonic love song about leaving.

"Sad, Sad, Sad, Sad, (and Faraway From Home)" - Peter Mulvey

"Travelling Again" - Dar Williams
