   Discussion: Who's your favorite hobbit?
Eri · 20 years, 6 months ago
Y'all know I"m in love with Pip.
meh · 20 years, 6 months ago
I've always thought there was so much more to admire in Sam's character than in the others.

The way I've always seen it (since the first time I read the books years ago) Frodo didn't really have a choice. (And for that matter, Bilbo didn't have much more choice than Frodo did.) Merry and Pip just wanted an adventure. But Sam went on this huge dangerous journey -- not because he wanted an adventure, and not because he had a great task put on his shoulders, but because he wanted to make sure his friend would be OK.

Of course, I have a cold, and my reasoning is usually fuzzy to begin with, so, uhm, feel free to call me a loony and tell me I'm wrong.
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

As I remember, Sam DID have a great task put on his shoulders. Gandalf sent him along as punishment for listening in at the window. There's a selflessness in his character, in that he stayed the journey to keep Frodo safe... but there's also part that kept going to avoid crossing the wizard.

Of course, it's been a while since I read the book... and the first movie was so long ago. I may be mistaken. It wouldn't be the first time.

And I agree, Samwise Gamgee is has the strongest character.

Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

I had always gotten the impression, at least in the movie, that Sam really wanted to go and keep Frodo safe and Gandalf gave him the assignment as a kind of wink-and-nudge assent to what he already wanted.

But I also may be remembering wrong. :)

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
You are right Andrea. Sam wanted to go with Frodo and "see the Elves."
J. Andrew World · 20 years, 6 months ago
Name me one other Hobbit which a cast member of Star Trek sang a song about them?
Mamalissa! Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Well, Gollum is mentioned in Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lot of Love" - and I wouldn't be suprised if William Shattner has a cover version. Of course, Gollum's really Smeagol, so I don't think you would've said "other" Hobbit. Am I close?
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
*tangent* - Isn't it in Ramble On, not Whole Lotta Love?
Mamalissa! Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
yeah - that too.

What do I know? I'm a Beatles Girl... Quick - ask me about Paul is Dead.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
I'm very much a Beatles girl but I had my Zep phase in high school. And my Floyd phase but that didn't really die, just got less fanatic. Zep, not even into them anymore. Ah well. :)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Yes it is Ramble On.

LZ also did Misty Mountain Hop that mentions Ringwraiths.
Zach Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

.oO In the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair. But Gollum and the evil wargs crept up and slipped away with her Oo.

It doesn't really work, logically, but then again I'm a loser. So hey, what are you gonna do?

Bel kjfdxcvuyjh8 Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Wargs...yeah, that is kind of off.
jaye · 20 years, 6 months ago
this was a tough one. but pippin won out in the end.

i have a whole lot of sam love, though.
renita Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
see, and I'm the other way around.

sam won out in the end.

i have a whole lot of pippin love, though.
Rachel Marie aka RAI Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Same for me!

Although I was kinda surprised by the fact that Pippin had lots o' votes... he's such a silly little hobbit... gotta love 'im. What a troublemaker.
emilie is CRANKY Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
because, liek omg billEH. *ducks*
nitsita Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
my cousin hates me for saying that. (the "omgbilleh!") :D
nate... · 20 years, 6 months ago
the ONLY one who's voted for smeagol so far?

Sheesh!
Agent Scully Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
How about voting for none?
nate... Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
well, yeah... granted.
If there was a "who gives a flying f**k" option, I would've chosen that...

:)

But I figured I'd choose one that was listed.
renita Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
um.

what about... "I don't like any hobbits" ?

that's listed.

not to mention, if you don't give a flying F*ck, there's also the option of just staying the F*ck out of a poll.
nate... Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
eesh.
No anger...

It's just the humor value of people be so overly obsessed with these silly movies.

renita Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
no anger man, no anger.

tha's just the troof.

I used the dirty words because they're fun. ^_^ and because I like consistency, and that was the consistent way to reply to the comment. :P

but honestly, if you really have no interest in a poll, you can just stay out of it...
nate... Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
yep!
And if I had no interest... I *would* have stayed out of it.

:)
renita Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
well then.

"who gives a flying f**k" would hardly have been an appropriate answer for you.
nate... Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
I disagree.
renita Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
but then, how is the option of "I don't like any of the hobbits" less appropriate, if less offensive?
nate... Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
because, I *do* like some of the hobbits.

the point is, this whole thing is just overblown... and people are FAR too obsessed.

:)
renita Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
ahhh.

so. not "who gives a flying f**k ... about hobbits"

but more of a

"who gives a flying f**k ... which one is my favourite" ?

and the obsession makes for fun, dontcha know.
Agent Scully Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
I like that option of who gives a flying f**k. :)

Tried to watch it again over the weekend since Starz had it on from Friday to Saturday all day and it just didn't work.

The memories of 7th grade english keep coming back of "God this book sucks!"
George E. Nowik · 20 years, 6 months ago

that's proud feet!

either her or the gal that sam marries at the end. she's got a pretty smile. :D

but smeagol clearly needed love in this poll. *grin*

thanx nate.

I forget that not everyone has read the books.

I really did, which is why I edited.

and how.

gotta root for the eeebil and creepy, after all. ;)

Because while I love the movies, The Hobbit is the only one of the books I enjoy to read.

Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

.oO Bilbooooooo, Bilbo Baggins, king of the wild frontieeeeer Oo.

Alan Mendelsohn · 20 years, 6 months ago
Bilbo all the way. The others all seem either so immature or so overangsty...
Bel kjfdxcvuyjh8 Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Yeah, I'm rereading The Hobbit...he is one great character.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
When I first read LOTR I was so disappointed that Bilbo wasn't the main character. After he went off I considered not finishing it. I flipped through the pages till I found his name again in the Rivendell chapters so I continued reading.
Starfox · 20 years, 6 months ago
Smeagol was not a hobbit per se. He's mentioned as a "hobbit-like" creature.
jaye Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
that's what i thought, too, but i looked it up, and TORn says he was a "Hobbit of the Stoor strain".

but i don't know - i haven't read the supplemental stuff. gordon? care to weigh in here?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
He is a hobbit, akin to the father of the father of the Stoors. That can be found in "the Shadow out of the Past" in FOTR
Zach Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Grruff. Gordon, you beat me to it. I always love correcting people on that point :-)
Mamalissa! Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
The TV-Guide channel has been running an RotK "Behind the Scenes" snippet. In the Sean Austin interview part, he says that Gollum used to be hobbit.

I only remember it b/c I also thought we was just "hobbit-like."
renita Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Gollum is "hobbit-like"

Smeagol was, at one time, a hobbit.
Josh Woodward · 20 years, 6 months ago
So.. what the hell is a hobbit?
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

Yer MOM!

Hobbit? I hardly know it!

_Hobbit*

Doktor Pepski, kommie · 20 years, 6 months ago

Samwise Gamgee is the most expressive, emotional of the performances of the trilogy. He has only one goal: Look out for Frodo's well-being! Nothing more. It requires him to summon up courage he never knew he had at times, to see that Frodo does not give up, and do whatever he has to to make sure Gollum does not get the ring, and Frodo throws it in the fires. It is at times heart-breaking and exhilarating to see (for example) Sam pick Frodo up because he can not go any further. To see him try to get to Frodo, whom is on a boat, knowing he can not swim.

iPauley Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Plus, there's the fact that, no matter who else you're talking about, Sam'll kill'em if they try anything. *nodnod*

*duck*

-- Pauley ;)
Samantha Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Pauley, have you been reading their *very* secret diaries again??? *giggles*... Yes.. Legolas finally got it out of Pippin that he's the prettiest elf in the fellowship [however, Pippin purposely failed to remind Legolas he is the *only* elf in the fellowship]... Aragorn is *still* not king... Arwen is playing "aloof, unavailable elf princess"... Elrond still thinks he looks good in purple... and they're all accusing Boromir of being a pervy hobbit fancier.. but of course, as said above.. no worries.. Sam will kill him if he tries anything... however, he convinced one of the other little halflings to blow his horn of Gondor.. *dies*
renita Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Rudy Rudy Rudy!

that was going through my head... Sean Astin rocks.

of course, as I was cracking jokes, I was almost in tears. so there ya go.
Samantha Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
yesh... Sean Astin rocketh my socks.. too bad he's married... ah well.. they dont call me homewrecker for nothing.. kidding.. kidding... but still.. he's hot... *drools*
soul groove feline · 20 years, 6 months ago
hmm. there's not a whole lot of frodo love in this poll. whyfor?
frodo is intricate, clever, and so. very. pretty. thatwillbeall.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
I voted for Frodo. The only other one I considered was Bilbo. Frodo is the most complex by far. He is the one that really has to make the difficult decisions. He carry's the weight of the world on his shoulders and never forgets it.
Pentecost Andrew! · 20 years, 6 months ago

As 'Nay was always so damned fond of reminding me, Smeagol wasn't neccesarily a hobbit, per se. He was either something hobbitlike, or a sort of "hobbit neanderthal," a "protohobbit" if you will. His hobbitish status was really a product of the speculation of an old gray wizard who was probably off fighting Nazgul in Arnor at the time when Smeagol's people actually lived.

Hobbits proper are scared of water, and Smeagol and his family were totally down with water. Yo.

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Long after, but still very long ago, there lived by the banks fo the Great River on the edge of the Wildernald a clever-handed and quiet footed little people. I guess they wre of hobbit-kind; akin to hte fathrs of the fathers of the Stoors, for the loved the River, and often swam in it, or made little boats fo reeds.

That is fromThe Shadow out of the Past, pg 62 in the second edition.

Not all hobbits hated water, the Brandybucks didn't. Merry, Pippin, and Frodo were all experienced boatman. Frodo's father died in a boating accident.

Wow flashback to my days on a Tolkien Newsgroup. One request, nobody ask if balrogs had wings. That can start knife fights.
