How about... "What the heck are you talking about?"
nate... Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Ahh, Just read a couple links people put on the main page.

As I said in the current forum.. I actually had no idea about it until I logged on to FHDC this morning and saw the poll. :D

I was in my car, driving the whole time.
Starfox Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
How about "What rock are you hiding under and why doesn't it have TV?" :)
nate... Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Heh.. read other comment.
I call it "car" then "Vermont".
:)

Pacho Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Alternate answer: I live in Western Canada and I do have a TV... for gaming. ;) No cable, no satellite, not even bunny ears.

That being said I heard about the power outages pretty much immediately online.
Zach · 20 years, 11 months ago
Nope. Not a bit. I live in Cincinnati, where the problem was little more than melodramatic news stations making it into a desperate tragedy when it is really just a really big inconvenience.
J Back · 20 years, 10 months ago
its more than an inconvenience when you are seriously ill, disabled or have no water, money or food.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 11 months ago
We lost it at 4:11 and got it back at 8:28
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
I just heard that about half of all Con Ed customers got their electricity back.

This poll will of course be skewed till later on as the people without power can't vote.
Back · 20 years, 11 months ago

there goes Gordon..thinking!

again!

Laura P. · 20 years, 11 months ago
My cable went out, does that count?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
My cable is still out. I'm just happy earthlink is working.
Zach · 20 years, 11 months ago
I love how there's an "It's still not back!" option...that's so funny. Seriously, who can honestly answer with that one?
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 11 months ago

Well, Jason Reiser logged in last night with no power. :) Rare, yes, but there are probably a few who can honestly choose that option. :)

Jason Reiser Back · 20 years, 11 months ago

Yeah... the DSL worked until about 2AM at which time I lost all phone lines and the DSL. Battery backup worked great until something seemed to happen at the CO (phone company central office).

Power outage: 21 hours

Phone & DSL outage: 20 hours and counting...

People near internet cafes or people with UPSes? People with laptops? *shrugs* :)
lawrence Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
I dunno. were it the DC area, I'd be fine on my UPS, but my ISP surely would have been out. they don't seem to have any sort of protection on their lines or equipment.
lawrence Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
(oh, sorry, I mean my UPS power supply and my internet ISP provider :)
Pacho Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
*brain explodes*

saying UPS power supply doesn't make sense. Uninterruptible Power Supply power supply?

internet ISP provider doesn't make sense either. internet internet service provider provider?

it's like when people say "hey, give me a second to grab my PIN number and we'll go to the ATM machine"... aiieeeee!
nate... Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Umm... I think that was kinda his point. :)
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 11 months ago

Yep! And they're even more plentiful in a group of geeks such as this. :)

Mamalissa! Back · 20 years, 11 months ago

I logged on last night with my laptop.

At 4AM I woke up (that's 4AM in the morning, for those who think this is that "annoying wrong phrases" forum), and there was a smoke alarm going off in my building. Now, I was using candles, and I figured other people were too. But there was absolutely no movement in the building. So, I tried calling one of my neighbors, but there was no answer.

After deliberating, I decided to call 911; if there *was* a fire, I didn't want to be the idiot who heard the alarm but didn't do anything. The firefighters came and checked it out - turns out the door to the roof was open.

So, all is good. I was freaked out, and started packing a bag and I got the cat carrier out, but everything worked out fine. I got power around 5:30, and haven't put the AC on yet - we're supposed to be conserving. I'll probably go out in a bit and hang out in Riverside Park.

emilie is CRANKY · 20 years, 11 months ago

i live in england. so ner.

(hah, and you thought i might possibly have something constructive to say? not a chance, mate.) :D

Nik Chaikin Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
why say something constructive when you can just poke fun at people?wait...was that constructive?OH, GOD! QUICK, COMPENSATE COMPENSATE.ahhhh, that did it, but just to be sure, YOUR MOTHER WAS A HAMSTER AND YOUR FATHER SMELT OF POWER FAILURE!
John J. Ryan · 20 years, 11 months ago
My office is closed today, still no power. At home, power went out for just a few seconds.
renita · 20 years, 11 months ago
My sister is in Toronto, she doesn't have power yet, and apparently they've been asked to stay at home unless they have a super-important, neccessary job (I'm thinking, hospital, ambulance, fire--that sort of thing)

and then she was also informed that there'd be rolling blackouts for the next few weeks. :p
Bel kjfdxcvuyjh8 · 20 years, 11 months ago
I live in Saskatchewan. I just watched on TV for a bit. All of you who lost power missed Peter Mansbridge's beard (on CBC)! It was hilarious. Although I didn't watch it for long, 'cause it's like, wow, i'm watching a traffic jam. Whoo-ee.

That's right, CBC had like diaster special coverage, and there's nothing to see 'cause there's no power. Us Canadians need more TV shows.
Arbie Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Last time I looked (noon Pacific time) CNN was still running 100% special coverage, as was CBC newsworld.
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Although they did show re>play at 8. Woot! :)
Nik Chaikin · 20 years, 11 months ago
I'm in Maryland, so i had power all the way.
Drea · 20 years, 11 months ago
Power just came back on for me about an hour ago.. was out for about 21 hours here in North York (northern TO)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
What I don't get is why last night they said that power would be turned on starting in the north east and moving south and west. According to that plan you should have had power first.

One thing I learned. I'm keeping a collection of lightning bugs for now on.
nate... Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
But, did that just apply to the US, maybe?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
No they specifically said it would start in Canada.
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Same here. I was walking around looking for food earlier today and a lot of the traffic lights were still out and Empress Walk was all closed up and it was kind of creepy. I just got the power back about an hour ago. I'm afraid to open my fridge... :(
Drea Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
I talked to my landlord around 7pm and that's when I found out how extensive the outage was.. and stuck anything that could spoil into the freezer part of my fridge, as there was more than enough ice in it to keep stuff for quite a while. So far, so good, and I've eaten stuff that was in there - good thing I've been putting off defrosting the freezer ;)
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
That's what saved my entire deep freezer. That and all the ice packs that were conveniently spread around the food from recent road trips. I wonder if insurance covers food, or if they'd just charge you more if you claimed it.
I can see the bunny Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Yeah, power was out here in Orillia for about the same length. It gradually came on around town over the space of an hour or so. Where I live was about the last spot in town to get power restored.
ChrisChin is Getting Old · 20 years, 11 months ago
I just got power back in my apartment in Brooklyn about 30 minutes ago. There was lots of cheering from the neighbors outside when it did come back on. Hopefully, it stays on..*crosses fingers* Though, it was strangely nice to see stars in the night sky walking over the Williamsburg Bridge on the way home last night.

actually, she did.
She cannot currently frum, post or reply to posts.
:(

Problem with her account on here for some reason.
I could still use my account fine on her laptop.
A girl named Becca Back · 20 years, 11 months ago

I didn't really have anything to add, I was just trying to test my posting abilities. O:)

(Or lack thereof.)

A girl named Becca Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
(And apparently I can at least reply now.)
Arbie · 20 years, 11 months ago

My isp is a Toronto company (well it is now, wasn't when I signed up) and they are still out so I am logged in from the computer in the office of my apartment building. StupidLook.ca bought out my isp and moved all the servers to Ontario. Boggles my mind that anytime I need a DNS or to get a page served to me that it round trips 3000kms. Can't believe that's cost effective. Grrrr, and no 'net for 24 hrs.

Oddly enough though, I was able to get on icq (but not AIM) and talk to George.

jen · 20 years, 11 months ago

We lost it at 4:10 ish yesterday and just got it back today at like 3:30. it was so creepy. ive never experienced anything like total darkness in the middle of the night on the street. when it first went out i was napping, and woke up and figured it would come back in in an hour or so.
