Pop Culture Help Forum

I thought there should be a place where people could come and have the fru community answer pop culture questions. Y'know, like when you have a theme-song to an 80's TV show stuck in you head and for the life of you, you can't remember what it's called and it just bugs you for days on end. I have the sneaking suspicion that fruheads are a wealth of such knowledge. I"ll kick us off with two questions of my own: 1) Can anyone tell me the title of a kids show that was on the Nick channel 15 or so years ago, with a department store dummy who came to life as the main character? I think it was his hat that brought him to life. 2) What movie was it that had the characters talking about some guy who fell down an elevator shaft and fell on some bullets? This one's been driving me nuts.

Was it Today's Special?

and I "believe" that the"dummy guy"toured Canada playing the Phantom in Phantom of the opera in the early 90's.

Awesome voice

Really?!

I know that Colm Wilkinson played the Phanton in the Toronto version in the early 90s. That was the CD and Tape that was available as an import in the record stores.
renita Back · 21 years ago
This is true.

Jeff Hyslop was fantastic. he'sa very talented performer.
I wanted to see him in The Music Man, but missed it :(
Eri Back · 21 years ago
When Phantom toured through Edmonton I wanted to see him... and the night I went, and got to go backstage and everything, was his night off. *grr*
Misch Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Yes, you are correct. He also appeared in the Toronto cast of Phantom as one of the guest Phantoms during the show's end run.

Damn. Now I'm earwormed with the theme song.

do-do-do-do-do-do-do.

And Muffy Mouse is squeaking annoyingly in a dark corner of my brain.

*Must stop reading fora*.

I'm not really a wealth of pop culture information, but I have ventured quite shamelessly into some of the pop music areas lately. Oops, silly me. ;)

But what about my question #2? The movie where they talk about the guy falling on bullets. I can't even remember exactly how it went, something about a guy having an accident at work. I'm going maaaad!
Laura P. Back · 21 years ago
It was some kind of action movie, which is weird because I don't often watch them. The guys talking about it were in coveralls doing some work in an elevator shaft, which is why I guess the subject came up. I keep thinking it's "The Usual Suspects" but I'm not sure.
nate... Back · 21 years ago
It's definitely not "The Usual Suspects".

But it DOES sound familiar.....
Hrm.....
Mamalissa! Back · 21 years ago
This isn't Mission Impossible where the elevator is rigged to impale Emelio Estevez on spikes at the end of the shaft, is it?
nate... Back · 21 years ago
Ahhh.. if only everything was rigged to impale Emelio Estevez.
:D
Laura P. Back · 21 years ago

Am I a Sheen, or am I an Estevez...

Snarki_Fru Back · 21 years ago

Ah of course! I knew it sounded familiar. Here's a snippet of the dialouge...the line was spoken by Bowler played by Janeane Garofalo:

Bowler: Have you ever heard of Carmine the Bowler?
Shoveler: Have we ever heard--?
Raja: Cor! Blimey, miss, don't tell us you're the Bowler's daughter.
Furious: I seem to remember there being a little controversy around
his death.
Bowler: That's right. The police said it was an accident. He'd come
home late one night and fell down an elevator shaft...onto some
bullets.
Raja: You know, I've always suspected a bit of foul play.

Laura P. Back · 21 years ago
ARGH! I'm an idiot. I think I was mixing up the visuals from another movie (The Usual Suspects?) with the dialoge, which was throwing me off.

I'm reading Soul Music by Terry Pratchett. Most of his names are jokes of some sort. He mentions a guitar maker on Discworld named Blert Wheedown. What is the joke? His assistant is Gibbsson, now that I get.
Nathan Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Bert Weedon was an author of guitar instruction books. Check out <http://www.ie.lspace.org/books/apf/soul-music.html>.

I seem to remember a TV show (or was is a movie) where the main character was an author (of mysteries?). the one scene I remember is a skeleton dressed in a falling-apart wedding dress and is his dead wife, pops out from under the stairs and they have this big long conversation and possibly dance. Did I dream this?
J Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
uh murder she wrote was about an author!
I doubt thats what you are talking about though
